Instead of revisiting objects and letting them accumulate value for the reader, Cheever instead propels the reader through a tunnel of unconnected incidents which can appear quite arbitrary but which hold together thematically, that is, abstractly, symbolically.
The first section of the book is devoted largely to Nailles, an earnest husband and mouthwash salesman struggling to reconcile the animal facts of existence with the stifling suburban milieu.
My grandmother lived in Westport, Connecticut, for more than forty years. Cheever makes it fresh, and throws in the counterpoint to the protagonist Nailles — the sociopathic Hammer who decides on cherver whim to murder Nailles’ son. The novel opens with an odd, lyrical, tense-shifting passage that fades into a typical past-tense third-person narrative.
When I feel this, I’ve noticed that if I can look into the face of the stranger and get some clue to the kind of person he is I feel better but, as I say, it was getting dark and you couldn’t see the faces of any of these strangers as they played through. Nohn struggled at times to get my head around Cheever’s flitting between times and characters, but that was nothing compared with my struggle to understand what on earth point he was trying to make.
