BEWITCHING SEASON by Marissa Doyle | Kirkus Reviews
Another aspect that I found, was that there was little description of any of the characters. The plot is a recycled version of the first book’s, with bewitxhing elements arranged only a little differently. The disappearance of their governess and fellow witch Ally spurs them to action Who abducted her? Was it necessary to centre the primary relationship around his trying to convince her to let him ruin her in order to save her?
Um… This is my romantic lead? I started out liking Persephone. At the beginning of the story, Victoria is still the heir presumptivetheir dad is a Viscount, mama is the daughter of a Baronet, they are rich, they are twins, they are a sensation.
Also, Niall didn’t quite cut if for me as the romantic lead. Most importantly, though, Pen mourned the loss of the Triple Goddess–and of Lady Keating’s favour–a marisa more than seemed appropriate, given that they would’ve come at the cost of her friend’s life.
The funny thing though? Quite a bit of the dialogue between the characters was stilted and didn’t sound at all like realistic or natural.
Check out he I adored the first book in this series, Bewitching Season, for its fairy-tale like magic and romance. Isn’t Pen supposed to be an upper class girl, with brains and a good sense about herself? Jul 10, Rachael rated it really liked it.
However, as the story moved on she becomes a little annoying. The characters are not only dull, but flat, and the plot is never flushed out or give bewitcning real life.
Shortly after her arrival in Dublin, Pen meets the handsome young Niall Keating. I wanted to shake that woman to her senses.
Now that Persy has all that she desires and more, Pen feels like she should concentrate on her own life so that she might find those things as well. My favorite character was Charles, who was delightful! And the only thing that I knew about Lady Keating’s appearance was that she possessed a green and silver ring which she always wore. The story focuses on Persy, while the second book in the series focuses on Pen. Betraying Season is as frustrating as Bewitching Seasonbut I thought the more confident of the two Leland sisters might provide a more compelling narrative.
The tantalizing hints that there’s more to Doireann come mostly from her absence, but she’s also refreshing in that her moral system is consistent. I really hoped this would be a series about sisters working together.
Having a much younger brother myself, I was really able to relate to the relationship the girls had with him. Persephone and Penelope search throughout all of London to find their beloved governess and look for clues to put a stop to the wicked deed. Unfortunately, it just fell flat. All of which, I think, prevented me from getting to know his character and liking him. Refresh and try again.
I thought this part was idiotic. The plot itself is full of twists and turns and Doyle brilliantly keeps them from unraveling! Back into the world of Ssason England full of witches who buy kid gloves and whatnot, Betraying Season focuses on a character that was a little neglected in the first book: She really doesn’t want anything to do with finding a husband or dancing the night away in a dress that she can hardly breathe in.
It wasn’t just that she felt like a third wheel at home with her sister in a constant state of connubial bliss with her new husband. Read for the Wild Things Reading Challenge 1: Preview — Betraying Season ebwitching Marissa Doyle.
